THE CROSS
On March 15th, 1113, an order declaring and providing protection of pilgrims and the passage to Jerusalem was enacted. Not since 1099 when Crusaders defeated the Ottomans, freeing the holy city, had the passage been safe to travel. The knights providing said duties were not assigned; they were volunteers. They were a rag tag group of skilled men – varying from battle hardened Crusaders, veterans of the Holy War in 1099, young pages, squires, young knights barely tested in combat, from all over the known world. These men formed together a Brotherhood that would be tried and tested over the next 400 years, as nearly every known country would combat them, even driving them back to the Isle of Malta where 900 knights fought valiantly against a siege from over 13,000 Saraceans, loosing 317 souls. Year after year, battle after battle, the Knights of St. John’s bound together a fearless and well respected brotherhood of men who chose this walk of life. We wear the Maltese Cross, taking up that mantle of Brotherhood. Much like the knights of old, we band together from all walks of life, individuals who hold sacred the elements of the cross. The eights points of the Maltese Cross mean Brotherhood, Commitment, Courage, Honor, Freedom, Respect, Patience, and Love of Life. We who ride, never feel more alive, then when we ride. We members of Big Belly Hawgs MC, take our patch, and every point that it stands for, very seriously. We hold our Brotherhood sacred.
The Creed
To be there when my brothers need me most
To never exploit my brothers pain
To uphold my brothers opinion even if not my own
To sacrifice without question so my brother need not
To serve my brothers needs, not my own
To love and honor his family as they are mine
To recognize my own failings before my brothers
To fail myself is to fail my brother
In so doing I pledge to walk in the light of brotherhood.
